He was the youngest son of the Lord Carson (born when his father was 66), leader of the Ulster Unionist Party and Lord of Appeal in Ordinary. He was educated at Eton - as was his son (a barrister who lives in Henley-upon-Thames) and two of his grandsons. He was the progeny of his father's second marriage - the first having been terminated by bereavement.
